A Celebration of Our Beloved Hymns

Come join us as six Thoreau members offer a short history of their best-loved hymns. We will learn some surprising things about the origin of these songs that grace our services. The words date from the 1200s to the twentieth century, and the music from the 1600s to contemporary times. They were written with inspiration that has the power to deeply move us today, decades or even centuries after their creation.

March 14, 2010                                         John Haberman

Emotional Existentialism

Today's sermon will be about John's lifelong quest to understand himself and how he fit into the overall scheme of things. He has concluded that his ‘reason for being’ is to satisfy his emotions. We will learn the important role that reasoning plays in directing John's passions to achieve personal and social goals.

March 21, 2010                                    Rabbi Dan Gordon

Tradition with a Twist: Wit and Wisdom from a Wondering Jew

Jewish legend teaches that the Torah (the first five books of the Bible) was written with black fire on white fire. The black letters are the text of what we are taught happened. The white part is what you might learn when you “read between the lines” and imagine what might have happened. These are the stories handed down through the ages that the ancient rabbis called midrash. Come join a modern rabbi, Dan Gordon, as he shares sacred stories that help us look at ancient teachings from a new angle. Rabbi Gordon has been serving Temple Beth Torah in Humble since 1998, and has an international reputation as a performer and folklorist.

Stewardship, the Joy of Giving   [multi-generational]

There are many ways that we give to each other and the world. We affirm everyone's role in the stewardship of our congregation, our neighborhood, the UU movement, and the planet. Come celebrate the culmination of our "Fresh Start" campaign in a worship service designed for multi-generational participation.

Avatar: A UU Film?

The very popular 3-D movie Avatar is a Rorschach test of a film because it has stimulated so many different observations and lively discussions among politicians, capitalists, Protestants and Catholics, feminists, anti-war groups, environmentalists and even non-smokers. Although some critics dismissed it as an amalgam of Dances with Wolves and a few other films, it is an ex-citing roller coaster entertainment with some thought provoking themes. A number of Thoreavians suggested that the movie is "very UU".  But is it?

Deep Time #6: How Did Everything Begin?

This is the first threshold in our modern creation story. Does the phrase "before the beginning of time" have any meaning? At least we can understand the evolution of the universe from the earliest moments – hot, dense, and rapidly expanding. Within seconds, elementary particles condensed. 400,000 years later, hydrogen and helium atoms formed, liberating the radiation that after 14 billion years now reaches us as the cosmic microwave background. "Dark matter" and "dark energy" remain mysterious, but the evidence for the story is compelling.

Reflections on the Art of Living

In 1991 Diane Osbon published a wonderful book, A Joseph Campbell Companion – Reflections on the Art of Living, a selection of brief Joseph Campbell readings. This morning, we will discuss excerpts from its first section: “In the Field”.

UUA Statement of Conscience: Peacemaking

In June 2008, the UUA adopted “Peacemaking” as a Congregational Study/Action Issue. In November, the Commission on Social Witness drafted a Statement of Conscience. It describes what peacemaking means to UUs; provides historical and theological contexts; and challenges us to make peace in Global, Societal, Congregational, and Interpersonal relationships, and our inner lives. We'll read the Statement and discuss it.

Children and Youth Religious Education Topics for February

Patti Withers, DRE

 All classes:

3/28 – “Stewardship: The Joy of Giving” The children and youth will use materials prepared during March to participate in parts of this service.

Wee Ones (2-4 yr. olds)

3/07 – “Follow the Leader” The children hear a story about bears, talk about leading and following, and play the game Follow the Leader.

3/14 – “Hush Little Baby” The children hear a story and think about what parents do for them. They make a gift for their parent(s).

3/21 – “Baby Bird” The children hear a story about a baby bird. They make sponge paintings and play a game pretending to be baby birds.

Creating Home (K-2nd Grade)

3/07 – “Stewards of the Earth” The children begin a series of lessons on Stewardship by defining the word in terms of caring for the earth.

3/14 – “Stewards of Thoreau” The class is visited by a long-time member to hear the story of our congregation. They learn about and put puzzles together of important stewards of Unitarian Universalism.

3/21 – “MY Stewardship for Thoreau” The children discuss ways they can be stewards for Thoreau and choose one to practice. They make Stewardship Boxes to display at next week’s service.

Faithful Journeys (3rd-5th Grades)

3/07 – “What Is Stewardship?” The group begins a series of lessons on Stewardship by defining the various meanings of the word. They begin Stewardship banners that they’ll parade at the service on March 28. They play a yarn game about stewardship of the earth.

3/14 – “Thoreau’s Stewards” The group has visitors who describe Thoreau members’ stewardship roles at Thoreau and the UUA. They finish their banners.

3/21 – “Stewards in the Community” The group has a visitor who describes Thoreau’s involvement in the larger community. The group chooses a project it can complete on an upcoming Sunday.

Youth – Grades 6-12

3/07 – “Our Stewardship Legacy” The Youth begin a series of lessons on Stewardship by looking at UU history. They prepare a survey for congregational members.

3/14 – “Values in Giving” The Youth choose what values they consider important and hear about other UUs who are considered good stewards. They finish planning the congregational survey and give it during coffee hour.

3/21 – “How We Give” The Youth compile the results of their survey and decide how to present it in next week’s worship service. They choose a project that involves stewardship of the earth or our community and begin planning it.

Fort Bend Family Promise

Once each quarter Thoreau hosts the families enrolled in the Fort Bend Family Promise program. This program helps homeless families get off the street and back on their feet by providing a place to stay, food, transportation, and counseling.
Volunteers are needed to provide dinners Monday through Thursday the week of March 21 to 28. Dinners can be delivered to be eaten at the Family Center or packaged for the families to take with them to the hotel where they stay. We also need to provide breakfast foods and the fixings for lunches for adults only (the children all get lunches at school). If you would like to help but cannot provide food, you can also donate money to go towards gift certificates at local restaurants for the Friday and Saturday dinners. (We usually buy gift certificates for places like the 59 Diner, Fuddruckers, Gringos, Otto’s BBQ. Those restaurants are close to the hotel where the families stay, so they can just walk there.)
There are currently only two families in the program, but it is in a state of constant flux. The most that we would need to feed is 14 people and the least is 2. I will let all volunteers know more as our host week gets closer. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Valerie Tolman or watch for TUUCannounce emails and respond to those.

Spiritual Dialogue

1:00 PM

I know but one freedom and that is the freedom of the mind.”     --Nelson Mandela
The theme for our March 21 Dialogue on Spirituality will be Inner Freedom. We'll explore the difference between exterior freedom and inner freedom: What does "being free" really mean?  Are our relationships based on real freedom? How would we define that freedom?
Our Dialogues on Spirituality are circle gatherings on the overall theme of discovering the spiritual nature of daily life and based on the ideas and method of life of Cafh, a path of spiritual unfolding (www.cafh.org). Each Dialogue meeting includes a centering meditation, reflection on a spiritual concept, and active-listening dialogue. We meet on the third Sunday each month at 1:00 in the sanctuary.

Canvass Kick-Off Event

6:30 PM

This year the Fresh Start Canvass Committee is planning an end-of-canvass celebration dinner to be held at the church on Saturday, March 27.  We will feast on a delicious barbecue meal provided by Springhill Barbecue and enjoy the varied entertainment provided by our own Thoreau friends in the Thoreau Talent Show.
Please mark your calendars for the dinner and start thinking about what talents you or your children would like to share. We are asking for short (up to 5-minute) acts – anything from poetry reading to juggling to playing a musical instrument or any sort of dancing.
To help defray the cost of the meal and give us an idea of how many people will attend, we will be selling tickets at $10 each. Children eat free. Tickets will be on sale each Sunday in March, and are available from Davis Tolman, Valerie Tolman, Penny Sullivan, Elizabeth Asnes, and Betty Johnson.
If you plan to enter the talent show, please let Davis know so he can plan the program order (davaltolman@gmail.com).
