February 5, 2012                                             Betty Johnson
Moral, or Prudential, Algebra

Moral, or Prudential, Algebra is a term coined by Benjamin Franklin in a letter sent to scientist and UU minister Jason Priestley in 1772. We will discuss if this idea is still relevant to our lives today, how it compares to absolutism, and relate these two concepts to modern political discourse.

Deep Time #29 From Villages to Cities

This lecture introduces the 5,000 years of human history that were dominated by the huge and powerful societies: agrarian civilizations. With the development of writing, we get the first era of recorded history.

February 19, 2012                                         Howard Gerber and Cheryll Landis-Gerber
Greenman Ministry

From four men at one unit, the Gerbers’ prison ministry for Wiccan inmates has increased to over a thousand men and women who correspond, read their newsletter, and attend their Wiccan rituals at fifteen different Texas prisons. The Gerbers have gone through background checks, incorporation as a nonprofit religious corporation, and even expulsion from the Texas prison system for a period of time. Hear their courageous story and learn how a minority religion can survive in the prison system.

February 26, 2012                                   Dr. Michael Crouch
How to Talk to Your Doctor

Doctors think in certain ways that may differ from how the average person (and patient) thinks. These differences can create obstacles to the doctor-patient relationship, understanding, and collaboration. Individual variations in doctors' and patients' personalities and backgrounds can enhance or undermine the doctor-patient relationship. Michael will briefly review these dynamics, and then facilitate a discussion of: (1) how to choose a compatible primary care doctor, (2) how to minimize doctor-patient communication problems, and (3) when and how to move on to another doctor (primary care provider or specialist).
